Abstract

Agro-technologies for cultivation of a number of medicinal plants have been developed but large scale cultivation of medicinal plants on farm lands in Uttarakhand is yet to begin. Among other causes for this gap, lack of reasonable correct information on economics of cultivation of medicinal plants is one important cause. The economics of cultivation of six medicinal plant species viz; Kutki, Kuth, Atees, Meetha, Chirayata and Buchh was studied on farmer's field in Uttarkashi District. The net benefits calculated for each species were subjected to cost effectiveness at 9% discount rate in relation to fall in prices by 20%, 30% and 40%, increase in wage rate by 20%, 30% and 40%, and increase in rental value (opportunity cost) of land by 20%, 30% and 40%. The net benefit calculated for each species were also analysed to sensitivity analysis in relation to increase in wage rate by 20 % and increase in rental value (opportunity cost) of land by 20%. The results showed that maximum net benefits of Rs. 1240, Rs. 427 and Rs. 153 could be received at 9% discount rate by Atees, Kutki and Chirayata respectively.

Abstract

20-45 years old teak, rain-fed, plantations carried out on forest land in gaps of original sal forests, that received frost protection by the nursing effect of sal over-wood were analysed for financial viability in tarai region of Uttarakhand. The maximum NPV (Rs. 19,856) at 12 % discount rate and IRR (31.20%) was obtained in 21 years old Barakoli plantation. It was due to higher survival rate (43.85 %) and the lowest gestation period (21 years). On the other hand minimum IRR 23.95 % was found in case of Lakhanmandi plantation site. It was because of the poor survival rate (23.65 %) and a long gestation period of 45 years. In general all the unirrigated teak plantations on government land (NPV at 12 % rate of interest, Rs. 3,556 to Rs. 19,856 and IRR 23.95 to 31.20 per cent) were found financially viable.

Abstract

Poplar with high productivity in 6-12 years rotation is being preferred, particularly as boundary plantations, in various agroforestry systems in northern part of India. A quantitative approach is an important step in the quest for a better understanding of the complex mechanisms of tree-crop interaction, which should offer scientific basis for designing more productive and sustainable agroforestry systems. This paper reports on the quantitative estimations of various interactions occurring at the tree line/crop interface of Poplar and wheat grown on irrigated alluvial soil in Western U.P. No significant adverse effect was noticed on wheat crop when grown with association of 3 year old boundary plantation of Poplar. However, a significant decline of 15.5 per cent was recorded only up to a distance of 3 m from the tree base due to 4 year old plantation. Water use of the system increased upto 6 m from the tree line which caused moisture stress to the wheat crop. At the same time boundary plantation of Poplar had favourable effect on the micro-climate which improved the status of soil moisture between 6-9 m distance and increased the water use efficiency. Competition for natural resources was reduced between weeds and wheat due to reduction in weed population and biomass in the system. Litter production averaged 1103 kg ha^-1 in 3 and 4 year old plantation and this returned 12,2.5,8,21.3 and 8.6 kg ha^-1 ofN, P, K, Ca and Mg to the soil. Addition of leaflitter near the tree line tended to change the physico-chemical properties of the soil.

Abstract

The tree growers of Yamunanagar District used various channels for selling their trees/produce; viz. Traders - Industries, Village level Agents/Contractors - Traders - Industries, Village level Agents/Contractors - Saw mills - Consumers, Traders - Saw mills - Consumers and Traders - Other markets of the State. It was found that 73 per cent of tree growers prefer through village agents, 23 per cent traders and only 4 per cent industries. It was also observed that socioeconomic factors such as literacy level, education and even family size do not have any significant effect on choice of market channels.

Abstract

Field study was carried out to assess the leaf litter production and quantity of nutrients returned to the soil through litter fall of Populus deltoides (boundary plantation) based agroforestry system under irrigated condition. Litter fall was restricted upto a distance of 9m from the tree line and total amount of 913.8 and 1291.8 kg ha^-1 was estimated with 3 and 4 year old plantation, respectively. Maximum amount of leaf fall (46-57%) was collected from 0-3 m distance and reduced with increase in distance from tree line .. On an average, 557.4, 367.6 and 177.5 kg ha^-1 leaflitter was collected between 0-3, 3-6 and 6-9m distance, respectively. Considerable amount of nutrients was recycled to the soil through leaf fall. The return of nutrients through leaf litter into the soil decreased in the order ofCa > N > Mg> K > P. It was estimated that highest calcium of 18.3-24.3 kg ha.1 , followed by nitrogen of 11.2-12.5 kg ha^-l, magnesium of 7.8-10.0 kg ha^-1 , potassium of 6.9-8.9 kg ha^-1 , and phosphorus of 2.45-2.59 kg ha^-1, was added/returned to the soil during winter leaf fall of Populus deltoides.

Abstract

Shrinkage behaviour of Robina pseudacacia was studied and its total tangential, radial and volumetric shrinkage was found as 7.7 %, 5.1 % and 10 % respectively which compares well with timbers like, Adina cordifolia, Dillellia pentagyna, Holoptelea integrifolia and Machiluus macrantha. Its retention of shape and size relative to teak was found as 73 % compared to teak taken as 100. The mean Inter-section Point (I.S.P) was estimated and found as 24 %. The species may be classed as moderately stable in shape and size, comparable to species commonly in use for furniture and joinery.

Abstract

Thrips (Thrips tabaci) are perhaps the most important insect pests attacking garlic. They are most common during warm weather. They feed on leaf surfaces, causing them to whiten or silver Thrips are most damaging when they feed during the early bulbing stage of plant development. Farmers were using different insecticides for control of thrips. However, Fipronil 5% SC constitutes the recommendation for managing garlic thrips. Spraying of Fipronil 5% SC @ 1 ml/ litre of water gives good control if sprayed at frequent intervals. Three sprays of Fipronil 5% SC at fortnightly interval has been recommended for management of thrips in garlic. this study was conduct at KVK adopted village Surkhera Mandsaur District. Fipronil 5% SC gave best performance in controlling thrips in garlic.

Abstract

This study was undertaken in Mandsaur district, situated in Malwa plateau semi-arid region of Western Madhya Pradesh Total 65 front line demonstrations were conducted during 2007-08 to 2011-12 in Kharif season in five villages (Guradiadiada, Udpura, Surkheda, Lasudawan and Barkheda dev Dungari) of three blocks viz., Mandsaur-I, Malhargarh- II and Sitamau-III. During these five years (2007-2011), 26 hectares under chickpea were demonstrated with improved management practices using improved varieties. Total 65 farmers were closely associated with chickpea demonstrations. To demonstrate production potential and economic benefit of improved technologies integrated pest management (Deep ploughing) consisting suitable varieties (J.G. 130 and J.G. 322), integrated nutrient management (20:60:20) NPK kg/ha.+ seed treatment with 1 gm carbendazim+2 g thiram per kg seed + Rhizobium or PSB culture @ 5+5g per kg seed + pheromone trap @ 10-12/ha. + bird perchers @ 50/ha.+ recommended insecticides. There was an appreciable increase in yield level 29.89 to 48.41% in chickpea under demonstration plots. Adoption of improved technology had significant impact on seed yield vis-à-vis yield gaps in chickpea. Improved technology enhanced chickpea yield from 301 kg to 486 kg/ha compared to farmers practice with an overall increase yield of 38.23 per cent.

Abstract

Krishi Vigyan Kendra Jaora District Ratlam conducted Front Line Demonstration programme for increase yield of Kharif crop soybean through use of improved variety seed in KVK operating area. Soybean is one of the most important oilseed crops in Madhya Pradesh, where it is grown 4.25 million ha area with the annual production of 4.50 million tones. Its cultivation is pre dominantly done in Ratlam district. It is observed that the farmers of Patidar, Dhakad and Aanjna community adopted the technology easily in comparison to other community farmers. Similarly adoption technology was more in educated farmer than uneducated farmers. Rich farmers took risk and adopted new technology faster than poor farmers. Front Line Demonstration was conducted for year 2004-05 to 2008-09 showed that percentage increased 29.36 to 41.50 compared to farmers practice in yield every year. Front line demonstration play important role in increasing the production of soybean with provide full package of practices to the farmers, like providy improved seed, seed inoculation with rhizobium culture, seed treatment with carbendazim or thiram, application of plant protection measures and weedicide application.

Abstract

Oral cancer is the most common head and neck cancer, found in 270,000 patients annually worldwide. Some cancers develop from precancerous lesions; however, there is no definitive clinico pathological factor or biomarker that reliably enables malignant transformation to be predicted in an individual patient. Early detection and early treatment of oral cancer are important for improving the survival rate of patients; prevention of oral cancer will clearly contribute most to decreasing its death rate. So correct diagnosis and timely treatment of premalignant lesions with high risk of malignant transformation may help to prevent malignant transformation.

Abstract

Pyogenic granuloma (lobular capillary hemangioma) is a common acquired vascular lesion of the skin and mucous membranes in the pediatric age group. Pyogenic granuloma and hemangioma of oral cavity are well- known benign lesions. The clinical diagnosis and differentiation of these lesions is at times difficult. The purpose of this article is to report an unusual case of benign tumor occuring on hard palate which was clinically diagnosed as pyogenic granuloma and hiatopathologically as capillary hemangioma.

Abstract

Ameloblastoma constitutes a homogenous group of neoplasm with mandible as a common site of occurrence in head and neck region. Histologically it appears in different patterns with follicular and plexiform as common one. We hereby report a case of 47 year old male with emphasis on correlation between histological findings and clinical behaviour of lesion. Regular follow up of patients should be carried out to predict the behaviour of this tumour and to ascertain histopathologic correlation to biological behaviour of the tumour.

Abstract

As oral cavity is an integral part of general health, persistent and unrelenting stress often becomes a danger affecting the oral health and overall health causing various psychosomatic disorders. Present study aimed to determine the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions and bruxism in psychiatric patients dependent on psychotropic drugs. Dental examination was done and questionnaire administered to 150 psychiatric patients and 150 control participants. In dental examination recurrent apthous stomatitis, burning mouth syndrome, oral lichen planus, bruxism, temporomandibular disorders were evaluated. Results showed that psychiatric patients had higher prevalence of bruxism, oral mucosal lesions in general, than the control group.

Abstract

Wide Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) offers global mobile multimedia communication capabilities by supporting high bandwidth and data rate up to 2 Mbps at chip rate of 3.84 Mcps and 5 MHz bandwidth. But the performance of the WCDMA system is degraded with various factors such as Interference, fading and scattering. The work in this paper analyzed the effect of Zero Forcing Successive Interference Cancellation (ZF-SIC) for quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and binary phase shift keying (BPSK) in WCDMA system. The ZF-SIC scheme is less complex and gives better performance as compared to other interference cancellation schemes. The ZF-SIC scheme is analyzed at the varying values of various parameters of Root Raised Cosine (RRC) filter. The results are obtained in terms of improvement in the Bit error rate (BER) at different values of signal to noise ratio (SNR). The simulation results indicated significant improvement in the signal quality of WCDMA system.

Abstract

Objectives: Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm has came out as a robust, effective and well-organized computational technique for solving global optimization problems. However, similar to other evolutionary algorithms of the same genre, DE has some inherent drawbacks like slow/ premature convergence, stagnation of population etc. due to its probabilistic nature. This paper aims to decrease the drawbacks and hence enhance the working of DE algorithm in term of convergence speed and accuracy of result. Method: This paper presents two improved versions of DE named Differential evolution with weighted base vector (DEwB-1) and DEwB-2 which adapts novel mutation scheme and self adaptive approach to control DE parameters. Findings: The corresponding DE versions are tested on 13 standard unconstrained problems as suggested in various literatures and a real life molecular potential energy problem. The numerical and statistical results expose that the proposed modifications assist in improving the performance of basic DE algorithm. Application: The variants can apply on more complex and constrained optimization problems.

Abstract

The study was carried out in assured and less irrigated areas of Aligarh district in Utter Pradesh. Sample was consisted of 300 dairy farmers (150 from each part). The result depicted that majority (71.34%) of dairy farmers of assured irrigated area were highly motivated to opt economic pursuit as compared to only 24.67 per cent in less irrigated area. In assured irrigated area most of the farmers had either favourable (47.33%) or undecided (40.67%) attitude towards dairying, while less than half (49.33%) dairy farmers had favourable or undecided attitude towards dairy farming. Result depicted that both the sample differed highly significant economic motivation (t=99.03) and attitude towards dairy farming (t=112.34).

Abstract

It is one of the valuable medicinal and spices crop used fresh as well as dry. In the Rajasthan state it is mostly grown in the western districts such as Jalore, Barmer, Jodhpur, Nagour, Ajmer, Pali and Sirohi. The present investigation was undertaken in Sanchore panchayat samiti of Jalore district of Rajasthan with the specific objectives of studying the knowledge level about the improved cultivation practices of cumin production technology and to identify the source of information being used by the cumin grower. The over all major findings reveal that knowledge of the farmers about improved cultivation practices of cumin production technology was found to be medium to high level. Majority of the respondents (74%) had medium level of knowledge followed by high knowledge (19%) and low knowledge level (7%). The highest knowledge gap (43.5%) was measured in seed treatment practices. The most credible source of information for dissemination was found personal localite. As an individual source, neighbor was found most important source of information followed by progressive farmers and friends.

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to evaluate physiological changes of Malvi bullocks during carting bullock drawn sprayer in soybean. Four healthy Malvi breed bullocks owing 6 to 8 years of age were selected for carting operation research work under Front Line Demonstration (FLD) during 2012-13-2013-14, at village Surkheda of Mandsaur (M.P.) There was a significant (P<0.01) increase in all the three physiological parameters (respiration rate, pulse rate and body temperature) as compared to their pre-work values.

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to evaluate performance of bullock drawn traction sprayer in soybean crop. Malvi breed bullocks were selected for carting operation research work under front line demonstration (FLD) during 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14, at village Surkheda, Badwan and Mohammadpura of Mandsaur (M.P.) The bullock drawn traction sprayer is capable to cover 6 rows at a stretch with an average field capacity of 0.75 ha/h. The average quantity of chemical solution sprayed per hectare was found to be 394.42 l/ha.An operating pressure was 3.8 kg/cm². The average travel speed of unit was 2.20 kmph. Field efficiency was found 74.2 per cent and labour requirement 2.66 man-hr/ha. There was a significant (P<0.05) increase in all the three physiological parameters (respiration rate, pulse rate and body temperature) as compared to their pre-work values.

Abstract

Technology plays an important role in growth and development of agricultural sector. Crop varieties are the crucial factor influencing the crop productivity. This paper examines the adoption pattern, determinants and pros and cons of an old wheat variety Malviya 234 (HUW 234) cultivated in eastern Uttar Pradesh. For the analysis, the study used various descriptive statistics and logit model to achieve the objectives. Based on the survey data, the study reveals that the variety is popular among the farmers. The finding reveals that though HUW 234 is more than 30 years old wheat variety; but still it covers a significant cropped area. It is popular mainly due to its taste, less water requirement and better performance in late sown condition. Age of the farmers is an important determinant in adoption of the variety. Intensive crop improvement programmes in old and popular variety should be promoted and policy regarding premium price to better taste should be formulated.
